While
there is a great variety of options in retirement housing, one type
of retirement community was specifically developed to accommodate
the changing needs of mature adults. At continuing care retirement
communities (CCRC's), residents move in when they can easily manage
on their own and enjoy the bountiful amenities and activities these
communities offer.
In
return for an entrance fee and a monthly maintenance fee, the
communities agree to provide care for the residents for the rest of
their lives - regardless of how much assistance they may come to
require.
Communities
vary in the services and amenities they provide to residents in
independent living, but most provide at least one meal each day.
Transportation, housekeeping services, libraries,
beauty/barbershops, are usually standard, along with fitness,
wellness and activity programs designed to keep residents health,
physically fit and socially active.
Regardless
of the services and amenities offered to independent residents, all
CCRC's provide several levels of supportive services. The two basic
levels are assisted living, for those who need help with everyday
activities such as bathing and dressing, and skilled nursing care,
for those who need nursing attention around the
clock.
When
evaluating communities, assess the facility in terms of quality of
services and financial stability. Most facilities encourage an
overnight visit to provide potential residents a glimpse of the
community's lifestyle.
